Overview

The Master of Financial Analysis is a specialist qualification that builds on your prior degree and substantial studies in accounting and/or finance. It will extend your understanding and abilities in financial analysis, giving you a solid grounding in high-level skills for the development of a wide range of careers, such as investment analysis, funds management, chief financial officer role or almost any career involving business analysis. It draws on cutting-edge teaching and research from UNSW Business School which is ranked 1st in Australia and top 21 worldwide for Accounting & Finance*

You will develop your strategy skills, risk analysis and management, valuation, and project development/management. A large range of courses gives you the flexibility to tailor your study to meet your individual professional development needs.

Entry requirements

  1. A recognised bachelor degree with 2nd class lower division honours or higher (or equivalent qualification) in Finance, Accounting, or a closely related discipline, as determined by the UNSW Australia Business School; or

  2. A recognised graduate certificate or graduate diploma (or equivalent qualification) in a cognate discipline with a credit average or higher, as determined by the UNSW Australia Business School; or

  3. A recognised bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) in a cognate discipline with a minimum of 7 courses in either Finance or Accounting and a credit average, as determined by the UNSW Australia Business School; or

  4. A recognised bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) in a finance-related or accounting-related discipline with a credit average or higher, two years of full-time equivalent of professional postgraduate experience[1] with at least one year of professional work experience in a finance or accounting role in an organisation, and membership of a recognised professional association, as determined by the UNSW Australia Business School.

    NOTE: In exceptional circumstances, applications may be considered for entry where the applicant has other relevant qualifications and experience not listed. This is in accordance with UNSW Policy and Procedure on Recognition of Prior Learning. Applicants will need to demonstrate that they have achieved the same knowledge and skills (learning outcomes) through their formal or informal learning as the qualifications listed for entry for this program.

    This may be evidenced by qualification certificates, records of assessment activities relating to course or program learning outcomes, examples of experience from the workplace, community, or other context which demonstrate relevant skills, knowledge or competencies, membership (or eligibility for membership) of professional organisations which require attainment of certain qualifications, or testimonials of skills, knowledge or competencies from workplace supervisors. Any relevant documentation should be attached to the application and will be considered by the Academic Coordinator for the Program.

You may be asked to provide evidence of your English proficiency to study at UNSW depending on your educational background and citizenship. English language skills are vitally important for coping with lectures, tutorials, assignments and examinations - this is why UNSW requires a minimum English language competency for enrolment.

If you’re completing an Australian Year 12 qualification (e.g. NSW HSC or equivalent), you do not need to provide anything extra to prove your proficiency. Your qualification will be used as evidence of your English proficiency.

If you do need to provide evidence of your English proficiency, this will be indicated in your application. You can prove this by providing evidence that you meet one or more of the following criteria:

Program structure

Tailor your specialisation to meet your unique career goals and professional development needs with this highly flexible degree. You can choose to take a blend of accounting and finance electives, bringing them together with a capstone subject in the final term of your degree.

There are more than 15 accounting electives to choose from, including business risk management, financial accounting, reporting for climate change and sustainability, and strategic management accounting.

You can also choose from over 20 finance electives, including financial markets and institutions, capital budgeting and financial decisions, socially responsible investing, cryptocurrency and decentralised finance. There are more than 20 subjects to choose from.

Skills and accreditation

You can expect to gain exceptional skills in decision-making and further your industry knowledge. As this degree is highly specialised to your needs, the skills and accreditation you gain will largely depend on the topics you choose to study. For example, the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) has approved some courses for complying with the RG146 Tier 1 requirements.
